The all chrome plated marine brass first stage regulator is a balanced diaphragmdesign which is environmentally sealed.
The diaphragm membrane transmits thepressure changes to the internal mechanism eliminating the need for thesurrounding water to enter the intricate mechanism.
The benefit of this type of firststage design is that none of the internal parts are exposed to contaminants such assalt, sand, chlorine or pool acids.
These environmental contaminants cause corrosionandmineral deposits to form on the internal mechanism deteriorating regulatorperformance.
TUSA has taken this concept one step further with the addition of a Dry AmbientPressure Chamber.
A standard diaphragm first stage regulator allows some water toenterthe main spring cavity.
Although the cavity is not associated with the intricateinternal components, it does allow the cold water to rest against the primarydiaphragm cooling the air that passes through the first stage.
This colder air canpromote second stage freeze up when diving in cold water.
The Dry Air AmbientChamber prevents water contact with the diaphragm and spring maximizingperformance, at any depth, in cold water conditions below 10°C (50°F).
In additionthe outside of this chamber is ribbed increasing the parts surface area thus actinglike a radiator to increase heat transfer further reducing the problems associatedwith cold water diving.
The first stage has two high flow low pressure ports (LP) and two standard LP portsalong with two high pressure ports ().
The high flow LP ports are positioned nearthe diaphragm and offer up to a 15% increase in air flow.
The S-90 second stage is also a pneumatically balanced system. A small chamberpositioned at the end of the poppet assembly trapsair and forces the poppet backagainst the intermediate pressure orifice.
This provides decreased inhalationresistance and increases smooth breathing in all conditions.
The lightweight compactcomposite designed second stage is also equipped with a Venturi Adjustment Lever.
This lever has two positions that are selectable by the diver. Use Surface” orminimum setting when entering the water or on the surface, reducing the sensitivityand possible free flow of the second stage.
Use the Dive” or maximum setting formaximum air flow during the dive.

The dry ambient pressure chamber on the R-700 prevents water contact with thediaphragm and spring maximizing performance, at any depth, in cold waterconditions below 50°F/10°C.
Ideal For Cold Water EnvironmentsThe R-700 is engineered for cold water diving. It features a ribbed top cap sectionthat acts like a radiator to increase the surface area for heat transfer. This designallows warming of the critical internal first stage parts that can freeze due to the gaspressure drops and lowtemperatures.
